This graceful butterfly wing necklace features a focal of Maine coast sea glass; clear/frosted, with intriguing remnants of a dark red, glazed pattern. The old artistic markings combine with oxidized copper wire wrapping to create the effect of a sheer, translucent butterfly’s wing.
The focal hangs from a beaded section that holds vintage, frosted white glass beads, dark mottled red jasper rounds, ornate solid copper beads and tiny, twinkling deep red crystal roundels. The beaded section attaches to lengths of natural waxed cotton cord, sort of a muddy reddish purple in color, and the necklace closes with a hand made, hammered copper spiral clasp. The clasp echoes the tiny, swirling spirals in the glass wing’s wire wrapping.
Sea glass hunting seems to be hugely popular, all over the world! Since we’ve been using it (all of our glass comes from Maine, near Penobscot), we’ve discovered some fascinating information. This link to photo archives on Sea Glass Journal has some amazing images!
