A brief history of jet...
Jet gemstone has been around for thousands of years. Considered by many a stone that provides protection, it carries healing properties and offers good luck.
Jet Jewelry is believed to make a great gift for someone starting a new job or beginning a new business pursuit. It has been said that Jet can bring clarity to a confusing situation. Those who are struggling through multiple trials and tribulations will appreciate Jet’s supportive powers. Jet is also called “Mourning Jewelry.” Queen Victoria popularized jet jewelry after her beloved husband, Prince Albert, died. She insisted that everyone in the royal court wear jet (mourning) jewelry, which they did for three years. Germany has unearthed jet artifacts that have been dated to 10,000 years B.C. They are mostly small, primitively carved amulets in the shape of animals. Other ancient pieces of Jet have been found, in a variety of forms from simple to intricate, in France and England.
True jet; True jet is lightweight. Finished pieces characteristically have sharp precise cuts. If subjected to a hot point (though not recommended) it will give off an oily or coal like odor. When rubbed with wool it will develop an electrical charge, similar to amber. The most definitive test is its streak. When rubbed against an abrasive surface, it will leave a brown streak. This is also a somewhat destructive test, which must be used with great caution. There are no known enhancements of jet. Jet will warm to the touch quicker than black glass (French Jet), and both materials will warm to the touch quicker than a mineral like chalcedony.
