A brief history of Turquoise…
Turquoise is the official birth stones for the month of December as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is the Planetary stone for Aquarius, Taurus and Sagittarius.
The name turquoise is apparently related to the fact that is was brought to Europe from the Eastern Mediterranean by Levantine traders, more commonly known as Turks. Its been used as a valuable ornament for ages and was used by the Egyptians thousands of years ago. The color is, of course, turquoise, but its range of color varies from green and greenish blue to sky blue shades.
For centuries, the most valuable turquoise came from Iran (Persia). The name “Persian Turquoise” is now generally used to refer to any turquoise stone that does’t have the black or brown veining commonly found in turquoise mined in the United States.
The Aztecs mined turquoise in an area now known as New Mexico. A significant amount of turquoise comes from Arizona, California and Nevada in the United States.
Metaphysical energies of Turquoise…
Metaphysically, Turquoise is considered to be a bridge between Heaven/Sky and Earth. It grounds us while still remaining open to Spirit. Many Native American cultures believe the stone helps to connect the mind to the infinite possibilities of the Universe. It can be an effective tool to use when removing and releasing old behaviors such as self-sabotage and self-martyrdom that no longer serves in growth.
Turquoise is great for working with the Throat Chakra, to foster honest and clear communication from the heart. Enhancing intuition, Turquoise also enhances communication between the physical and spiritual realms. Use Turquoise to release old vows, express freely, and ease nerves when speaking in public. Turquoise is a protective stone, often being used for amulets. Turquoise is also a healing stone, providing strength and purification.
